A rare early 18th-century Scandinavian antique folk-art boarded layette or swaddling tray, painted in orange-red and green, with initials and the date 1728. The splayed sides are elaborately decorated with pierced heart and roundel motifs.
A layette is a collection of clothing and accessories for a newborn child. Swaddling, an ancient practice, took the form of fabric bindings to wrap around a baby to restrict its movement.
The tray would have been used to keep clothing, accessories and bindings in one place.
Holding nearly 300 years of lived history in its paint and form, this tray brings the warmth and humanity of early Nordic domestic life into the present.
Provenance: Scandinavia. Early 18th Century.
Material: Polychromed wood.
