A fine Dutch Golden Age Delftware tile
This early‑to‑mid 17th‑century Delftware tile, dating to circa 1625–1650, is painted in underglaze blue on a tin‑glazed earthenware body. It depicts a standing soldier in period costume, captured mid‑gesture with a pike drawn, rendered in lively, confident brushwork typical of early Dutch figurative tiles.
The corners are decorated with a classic lily‑head (leliehoek) motif, a hallmark of Delft tiles from this period. The painterly style, costume details, and stance all align with early Golden Age production, when Dutch workshops were producing some of their most characterful tiles.
Technique and surface
The tile is tin‑glazed, giving the surface its soft, opaque white ground and allowing the cobalt blue decoration to sit cleanly on top. Small glaze imperfections, edge wear, and firing irregularities are consistent with 17th‑century manufacture and add to the authenticity and charm of the piece.
A decorative and collectible example
Tiles of this period depicting single figures — soldiers, gentlemen, tradesmen, children, animals — were produced in large numbers but survive today with varying degrees of condition and clarity. This example retains strong linework, a dynamic pose, and crisp lily‑head corners, making it an excellent decorative or collector’s piece.
