A late 18th-century / early 19th-century Napoleonic prisoner of war straw-work box, circa 1793-1815.

Straw marquetry is usually referred to as Napoleonic prisoner of war work. The reason for this is that most pieces available today were made in England in prisoner of war camps and prison ships between 1793 and 1815. Dartmoor and Norman Cross were two of the chief centres, but such prisons were scattered throughout England with some the work dating back to 1756.

This box with a hinged lid and sloping sides, opens to reveal a mirror verso and below, a multi-compartmental fitted interior with central pin cushion and a single drawer to its base with turned bone handle.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - Losses throughout, loss of colour to straw on outside. Hinge missing to one interior lidded compartment. Right hand side slightly separating at one corner.
