A beautifully made early 19th‑century English treen book box, crafted to imitate a finely bound volume. The hinged lid is geometrically inlaid with various specimen timbers, highlighted with delicate chip‑carving that catches the light and gives the surface real depth. The semi‑circular “spine” is linearly inlaid, echoing the raised bands of a period leather binding, while the sides are shaped in a gentle convex curve, completing the illusion of a substantial antique book.
These boxes were often used to store letters, keepsakes, or valuables, and this example has all the charm and craftsmanship associated with early 19th‑century treen. The colour is warm and mellow, with the natural tones of the mixed timbers creating a subtle but striking decorative effect.
A tactile and highly decorative piece of English folk craftsmanship — perfect for a desk, library, or treen collection.
Provenance: England. Early 19th-century.
Material: Pine carcass with inlaid veneers.
