A time-worn decorative early 19th Century metal alloy oval-shaped plaque depicting The Incredulity of St.Thomas.
Continental origin.
This depiction is a reference to the Gospel of Saint John where the Apostle Thomas, who, in John's account, refused to believe the resurrected Jesus had appeared to the ten other apostles until he could see and feel Jesus's crucifixion wounds himself.
The phrase "Doubting Thomas" is derived from this reference. This term refers to a sceptical individual who refuses to believe without direct personal experience.
This plaque bears the remains of its original gilding albeit it is significantly worn down to the base metal in many parts.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - please refer to the images. With a time-worn surface and a slight dent to the outer-right rim. The plaque still displays well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
Size - Width 27 cm x Height 20.5 cm (10 1/2" x 8").
