A late 18th-century antique stånka (tankard), circa 1780.
This is a traditional form of drinking vessel often associated with Eastern European cultures, particularly in Slavic countries.
The stånka is typically made of wooden staves, as in this example, which has been bound with willow binding, and is characterised by its unique design, which may include intricate carvings, engravings, or decorative elements.
These vessels were commonly used for drinking beverages such as mead or vodka during social gatherings and celebrations.
Our example has a typical hinged lid fitted with a carry handle and a shaped sliding bolt to hold the lid tightly in situ, and to its side, the main body is fitted with a scroll-shaped handle. The surface has been painted in polychrome with folk-art decoration, including geometric patterns and a decorative cartouche flanked by shapes almost resembling angel's wings.
The object displays very well due to its generous size.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - Good as per the images.
Size - Height 29 cm (11 1/2")
