This finely turned tobacco jar is a distinctive example of German Biedermeier treen, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The cylindrical body is articulated with ebonised vertical columns, giving the piece the appearance of a miniature rotunda — a hallmark of the period’s fascination with classical architecture and clean, geometric forms.
The domed lid, stepped in the Biedermeier manner and finished with a central knop, lifts on its original brass hinge. Around the upper rim sit a series of small ebonised roundels, a decorative detail strongly associated with German treen of this era. The warm, honey‑coloured timber contrasts beautifully with the black architectural elements, creating a sculptural object that is both functional and highly decorative.
Originally used for storing loose tobacco, jars of this type were often found on desks, counters, and in domestic interiors, where Biedermeier design emphasised simplicity, craftsmanship, and a refined classical influence. The interior shows honest wear from use, and the surface carries the small marks and handling patina expected of a well‑loved early 19th‑century piece.
A handsome and increasingly scarce example of Biedermeier architectural treen, full of character and presence. Beautifully made and architecturally striking — practical, sculptural, and full of early 19th‑century charm.
