A rare early three-ring 19thC antique gimbal lantern from a whaling ship.
Offered for sale in "attic found" original condition.
Made from iron and designed with a gyroscopic mechanism, the oil reservoir (filled with whale oil) and double-valve wick burner at the centre would remain upright at all times, even when swinging violently in rough seas. The outer sphere/cage was designed to keep the naked flame away from the rigging and sails or anything else that might be deemed combustible.
A charming period item relating to a time in history now long-since passed.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - Please refer to the images. Oxidation to the iron commensurate with age. The lock is held in closed by a later pin. The mechanism still functions. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
