An early 19th-Century Print depicting William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania (yes, the print is spelt "Pensylvania" as it was back in the 18thC!)

The Liberty Bell and the U.S. Constitution both feature the "Pensylvania" spelling, demonstrating its prevalence at the time.

The full-length image was published by Alan Hogg, 1st August 1804, after the original by Mr Boydell which was engraved in the 1770's.

The print is entitled "Wonderful Museum" featuring "The Extraordinary & Worthy Character William Penn."

Founder of Pennsylvania, USA, William Penn (1644-1718), Penn was an English Quaker and advocate for religious freedom. He played a significant role in the establishment of Pennsylvania as a place for religious tolerance and democratic governance.

In 1681, King Charles II granted Penn a charter for the land that is now Pennsylvania. Penn envisioned the colony as a "Holy Experiment" where people of different faiths could coexist peacefully.

This print likely reflects the 18th-century interest in notable figures who contributed to the development of America. It serves to honour Penn's legacy as a proponent of democracy and human rights.

Prints like these were popular, allowing for the mass distribution of images and ideas. They often combined artistic representation with text to educate and inform the public.

The title of "Wonderful Museum" suggests the print may have been part of a series or collection that showcased remarkable individuals and events, reflecting societal values and interests of the time.

Overall, this print not only commemorates William Penn's contributions but also serves as a historical artifact that illustrates the era's cultural and political climate.

Presented behind glass, and remounted within a modern cream single-mount and contemporary black frame, this print displays well.
