A wonderful example of an early 19th-Century Anatolian marriage chest originating from the region where Eastern-Europe meets the Middle-East.
Constructed from cedarwood and painted in original ochre-coloured polychrome.
Decorated with hand-cut metal strapwork, embossed with scallop shells and love hearts, and additional painted detail including black tendrils with yellow spots.
Also featuring mirrored discs which resemble a pair of eyes - thought to be good luck charms and ward off evil.
The lid opens to reveal an interior with a till (candlebox) and polychromed decoration to the interior of the lid too.
All-in-all, a charming folk-art marriage chest with links to local folklore relating to its region of origin.
Provenance - Ex-private collection, Debenham, Suffolk, England. Previously acquired from a specialist folk-art and continental furniture dealer.
Condition - Good as per the images. There is surface wear commensurate with age. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
