A charming early 18th-century Scandinavian folk art box, dated 1722. Constructed from pine boards with nailed joints, the box retains traces of its original painted decoration — a polychrome surface featuring floral and geometric motifs typical of Nordic rural craftsmanship.

The lid is flat and slightly overhanging, with a simple iron clasp and hinges. The interior is void, likely used for storing personal effects, textiles, or devotional items. The date “1722” is hand-painted on the underside of the lid, offering a rare and specific anchor in time. This box was likely made as a love token or possibly to celebrate the marriage of two people, given that it also bears the initials of "MIH" and "AOD".

This box exemplifies the rustic artistry of Scandinavian peasant traditions, where everyday objects were imbued with decorative charm and symbolic meaning. A rare survival with excellent patina and folk appeal.

Additional Historical Context:

Scandinavian folk art boxes from the early 18th century reflect a tradition of functional decoration rooted in rural life. These boxes were often made by local craftsmen using pine or birch, and decorated with polychrome paint — typically reds, greens, and ochres — applied freehand or with stencils.

  • Purpose: Used to store textiles, devotional items, or personal belongings. Some were bridal gifts or dowry boxes.

  • Design: Nailed construction, flat or domed lids, and painted surfaces with floral, geometric, or symbolic motifs.

  • Dating: Many were inscribed with dates and initials, marking significant events or ownership.

  • Regional Variants: Norway, Sweden, and Denmark each had distinct decorative styles, often tied to local guilds or family traditions.

This example, dated 1722, is a rare and early survival, offering collectors a tangible link to Nordic domestic heritage.
