Saint Augustine of Hippo (Aurelius Augustinus, 354-430 CE) was the first major philosopher of the Christian era. He was the Bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia during the waning years of the Roman Empire, and his most famous work, The City of God, described what he believed to be the cause of this decline.

The canvas is unsigned.

Verso, the frame of the painting bears a written script stating "Tableau Provenant du Chateau de Bruins (Sarthe) 1737".

Sarthe is a department of the French region of Pays de la Loire, and the province of Maine, situated in the Grand-Ouest of the country. It is named after the River Sarthe, which flows from east of Le Mans to just north of Angers.

Condition - as per the images. Surface wear and minor re-patching and re-touching of the canvas.
