An early 18thC English school antique oil on canvas half-length portrait of a bewigged gentleman in a feigned oval.

Depicted with white stock, blue waistcoat and brown coat with gold buttons and braid.

A pencil mark verso at the base of the frame states that the sitter is "Mr Newcome, July 6th 1736, AET 49" (the abbreviation for "Aetatis' meaning "at the age of").

Clearly a wealthy gentleman.

The artist is unknown and the painting bears no signature. The portrait has a slight naivity about it which we find charming.

Presented in a period ebonised frame with gilt inner slip.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - The portrait is offered in "attic found country house condition". The way we like to find them! The painting has never been re-lined. There is evidence of a number of minor patch repairs to the canvas verso. A minor hole is apparent to the canvas and a surface scuff too. Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size - Excluding the frame 76 cm x 64 xm (30" x 25 1/5")
