An evocative early 18th‑century English delftware plate, attributed to the Liverpool pottery of Philip Christian, active during the first decades of the century. Christian’s workshop is celebrated for its lively, painterly blue‑and‑white decoration, executed with a freer, more expressive hand than the more formal London and Bristol productions of the same period.

This example features the characteristic traits of early Liverpool tin‑glazed ware: a soft, slightly milky glaze, confidently brushed cobalt floral decoration, and the gentle irregularities that speak to hand‑thrown and hand‑painted manufacture. The central floral spray—rendered with fluid, spontaneous brushwork—is framed by a border of stylised leaves and blossoms, a decorative vocabulary strongly associated with Liverpool wares of circa 1715–1730. Comparable pieces from the Christian pottery show similar compositional balance and pigment handling, supporting the attribution.

The surface displays the expected signs of age: minor glaze pinholing, subtle pooling of pigment, and historic rim wear entirely consistent with three centuries of survival. These features contribute to its authenticity and charm, enhancing its presence as both a decorative and historically significant piece.

A fine and increasingly scarce example of early Liverpool delftware, appealing to collectors for its artistry, condition, and place within the evolution of English tin‑glazed ceramics.

Provenance: England. 19th century.

Material: Tin-glazed earthenware.

Condition: Please see the images. No cracks or restoration. The rim fritting is commensurate with age.

Dimensions: 30.5 cm (12 inches)
