An early 18th-century English antique brass clockmaker's disc inscribed "William Newman, Norwich", surrounded by a decorative wheatsheaf border.
The dial was once mounted upon the arch of a clock dial.
William Newman is listed as a clockmaker working in Norwich, c.1687-1739, and "Freeman of Norwich as a clockmaker 15th June 1730" in the reference book "Norfolk & Norwich Clocks and Clockmakers" - edited by Clifford and Yvonne Bird. The entry states that "Newman, clockmaker from London, he now lives at Sign of the Dial at the bottom of St. Lawrence Steps in Norwich" (Norwich Gazette 18th June 1728). He met an untimely end at the age of 52, falling into a river Wensum from Coslaney Bridge, Norwich (now spelt Coslany) after drinking heavily. His body was recovered close to Black Friars, Bridge, Norwich.
