An Early 18th‑Century Baroque carved wooden angel, retaining its original polychrome and gilding, carved with remarkable tenderness and devotional poise. The figure stands with slightly bent knees, robed in soft blue with a gilt sash, holding a scroll in one hand — a gesture of annunciation or proclamation. The angel’s expressive face and finely modelled wings reveal the hand of a provincial yet skilled sculptor working within the Continental Baroque tradition, likely French or Flemish.
The surface bears a centuries‑old patina, with gentle wear to the paint revealing the walnut beneath, enhancing its authenticity and warmth. The carving’s proportions and drapery folds echo ecclesiastical ornamentation from chapel or altarpiece settings, making it ideal for collectors of religious sculpture, devotional art, or period interior design.
Provenance: French/Flemish. Early 18thC.
Material: Limewood with gesso and polychrome.
Condition: Stable and complete, with minor age‑related wear to polychrome and gilding consistent with its 300‑year history. Mounted for display; structurally sound. A wooden block has been added to the rear of the base to keep the figure both upright and stable.
Dimensions: 16.5 in (41.9 cm)
