This impressive early 18th‑century limewood panel is carved in bold Baroque relief, its surface alive with movement, depth, and expressive detail. The sculptor’s confident hand is evident in the sweeping curves, crisp modelling, and dramatic interplay of light and shadow — all hallmarks of Baroque decorative carving.

The panel is initialled “MARI”, suggesting the work of a skilled regional carver or workshop, and may once have formed part of a larger architectural or ecclesiastical scheme. Limewood, the preferred medium of many master carvers of the period, allows for the fine, fluid detailing seen throughout the piece.

A warm, time‑softened surface and traces of historic finish give the panel a rich, authentic presence. Whether displayed as a standalone sculptural artwork or integrated into an interior scheme, it brings a powerful sense of early 18th‑century craftsmanship.

Provenance: Germany. Early 18th century.

Material: Carved limewood.

Initials: “MARI” carved to the surface.

Dimensions:

Height: 45 cm (17.7 in)

Width: 36 cm (14.1 in)

Depth: 5 cm (2 in)

Condition: Good antique condition with age‑related wear and a naturally developed patina consistent with its period.

This is a powerful fragment of Baroque craftsmanship — sculptural, expressive, and carrying three centuries of presence.
