A fine early 17thC English antique carved oak maquette (architects model) representing a Gothic altar chair. The back decorated with a gothic tracery-shaped cresting rail inset with dagger-formed apertures above a back carved with linenfold panelling, shaped sides and down-swept arms over a plank seat and planked base.

Verso, the chair bears an old label dated "1618 - John (Surname is difficult to read)". Could this be the maker?

Likely produced as a presentation piece or ecclesiastical prototype, the maquette combines sculptural charm with architectural precision. Its compact form and expressive detailing suggest both reverence and craftsmanship, with surface wear and patina consistent with age.

A rare survival of early 17th-century oak carving — ideal for collectors of ecclesiastical antiques, architectural models, or devotional fragments.

Provenance: England. 17th century.

Condition - surface wear commensurate with age. Please refer to the images. The base has been split and naively glue-repaired however this does not detract and the chair still displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size: Height 41 cm x Width 23 cm x Depth 10 cm (16" x 9" x 4")
