An exceptional early 17th‑century Florentine albarello, or wet drug jar, crafted in tin‑glazed maiolica and richly decorated in the Italian Renaissance tradition.
This ovoid vessel, with flared collar and double‑loop handles, bears a central cartouche depicting the crowned Virgin and Child — a devotional image framed by a yellow band inscribed ACQUA MIRACOLSA (“miraculous water”).
Likely used in a monastic or apothecary setting, this jar would have contained a revered liquid preparation — medicinal or holy — administered with ritual care. The spout at the base suggests controlled dispensing, while the vibrant palette of cobalt blue, verdant green, and golden ochre evokes the grandeur of Florentine ceramic artistry.
This piece is not only a rare survival of early pharmaceutical ware, but also a devotional object — a fusion of faith, science, and craftsmanship. Its sculptural presence and iconography make it a museum‑worthy addition to any collection of Italian majolica, religious art, or early medical history.
