An early 17th-century English antique oak armchair, circa 1620.
With a shaped and carved top rail above a single panelled back incised with a lozenge, a solid two-part plank seat is flanked by shaped arms and turned legs united by rectangular peripheral stretchers.
The oak is rich and tactile, with deep patina and wear consistent with age and use. The proportions are generous, the stance confident — a chair of status and presence.
Likely made during the reign of James I or Charles I, this wainscot armchair would have graced the hall of a prosperous household. A poetic survivor from the Stuart period.
Provenance: England. Early 17th century.
Condition - good overall as per the images. The back and front legs have been re-tipped. The rear stretcher has also been replaced at some point in its life. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
