A characterful early 17th‑century English antique oak coffer, constructed in solid timber with a single one‑piece top and a façade with two plain and two carved deep linenfold panels — one of the most recognisable decorative motifs of the Tudor and early Stuart periods. Raised on traditional cut‑away ends, the coffer has the robust, architectural presence associated with rural joinery of the 1600s.
The linenfold pattern, originally inspired by folded parchment, was a hallmark of late‑medieval and early‑modern furniture, prized for its sculptural depth and the way it catches the light. By the 17th century, it remained a favoured motif in provincial workshops, where joiners continued to carve it into chests, cupboards and wall panelling.
This example has excellent early colour, a time‑softened surface, and the honest wear expected of a working chest that has served for centuries. The proportions are particularly appealing: wide, low and practical, making it ideal for use as a hall seat, blanket chest, or statement storage piece in a period or contemporary interior.
Provenance: England. Early 17thC. Ex-Fray collection, Grange Hall.
Material: Oak and iron.
Condition: Please refer to the images. There is an age-related split to the top, but it is stable and has been strengthened to the underside with the addition of a supporting baton. The hinges have been replaced historically. There are traces of old worm activity, but this is long since gone and has also been treated as a precautionary measure.
