A good 17th-century English antique carved oak linenfold panel of characteristic form, the single board worked in crisp relief with the draped, folded fall of cloth that gives the motif its name. Of upright proportion and retaining a fine mellow colour, it is a handsome and decorative survival of one of the most enduring patterns in the English joiner's repertoire.
The linenfold — known to the French as parchemin plié, "folded parchment" — emerged in the Low Countries in the later 15th century and swiftly became the defining ornament of the Tudor interior, dressing the wainscot of hall and parlour, the fronts of chests and the panels of doors and screens. The carver's art lay in conjuring the soft, pliant illusion of hanging linen from the unyielding substance of riven oak, and the best examples, such as this, carry real conviction in the rolled edges and rhythmic vertical folds. A panel of this kind would originally have formed part of a larger scheme of panelling or a piece of joined furniture.
The piece carries a distinguished provenance, having formed part of the celebrated John Bank collection and being illustrated in the collection catalogue, Part I, page 152 — a published pedigree that adds considerably to its interest.

Condition: There are chips and losses to the edges, some old worm, a replaced section of timber at the top, and a split at the base, all entirely consistent with age and the panel's long history of use. None detracts from a most attractive and well-documented example.
Dimensions: 31 in × 9 in (79 cm × 23 cm).
