This evocative 17th‑century bentwood box is a superb survival from the early modern / Baroque period, crafted in solid timber and shaped using traditional bentwood techniques. The domed lid, original swing handle, and hand‑forged iron hasp are all characteristic of the era, when such boxes were used to safeguard documents, coins, and personal effects both at home and on the road.
The surface has developed a rich, centuries‑old patina, with the timber and ironwork showing the gentle irregularities and tool marks that define genuine 17th‑century craftsmanship. Early bentwood boxes of this form are increasingly scarce, and this example carries a quiet authority that only true age can bestow.
Perfect for collectors of early vernacular objects, or as a striking decorative accent in a country‑house or historically informed interior—a tactile, atmospheric piece with real presence.
Provenance: Northern Europe. Most probably Sweden. Early 17th century.
Material: Beech and iron.
Condition: Wear consistent with age and long use. Surface marks, patina, and minor irregularities to the ironwork are all entirely commensurate with a 17th‑century piece. Structurally sound.
Dimensions:
Height: 10 cm (approx. 3.9 in)
Width: 11 cm (approx. 4.3 in)
Length: 21 cm (approx. 8.3 in)
A rare and atmospheric 17th‑century bentwood box — full of presence, patina, and the unmistakable charm of early craftsmanship.
