16th-Century & Later Gothic Antique Carved Wood Panel Depicting Angels Kneeling Below A Cross Symbolising The Passion Of Christ

A 16th Century & later Gothic antique carved wooden panel (deal/pine) depicting two angels praying at the foot of the Holy Cross. This depiction is more than likely one of the Passions of Christ given the Cross which symbolises "Arma Christi", the items associated with The Passion Of Christ.

Spanish origin, possibly Aragon.

With an applied brass repousse-worked pediment incorporating both blind and open gothic tracery with lancets and daggers and a pair of decorative pinnacles over an ebonised cross with a pair of kneeling angels below, one flanking each side of the Cross.

Provenance - Acquired directly by us from a Spanish collection via a third party.

Condition - Please refer to the images. The panel was originally gessoed and polychromed. A large part of this has been worn away with the ravages of time. The angel to the left of the images is lacking his hand. The panel has had some 19thC and later restorations although not evident from the front. Two batons have been applied verso and a vertical piece of timber appears to have been replaced historically, again, verso. There are also 6 old screw holes to the front where the panel was most probably fixed to something else during its life. The panel does display well.
