A fine and primitive example of Tudor Gothic carving, this Romayne portrait panel dates to the early 16th century. Fashioned from solid oak, it depicts a worn yet expressive portrait head, characteristic of the Henry VIII period and the decorative traditions of late medieval England.
Romayne panels were popular in domestic interiors and ecclesiastical settings, often used to embellish furniture, wall panelling, and architectural features. Their bold relief and stylised faces reflect the transition from medieval iconography to Renaissance humanism.
This panel’s weathered patina and tactile surface testify to centuries of survival, offering collectors a direct connection to Tudor artistry. It is a rare survivor, ideal for display in collections of Gothic, Tudor, and Renaissance antiques, or as a scholarly study piece for those interested in early English woodcarving traditions.
