An early 16th‑century carved oak sculpture, finely depicting Saint Jerome with a lion upon his back.
The figure retains traces of its original polychrome, a rare survival that enhances authenticity. Jerome is traditionally shown with a lion, recalling the legend of him removing a thorn from its paw — a symbol of wisdom, compassion, and divine authority. The facial expression is contemplative, with furrowed brow and solemn gaze, embodying the saint’s role as translator of the Vulgate and one of the four great Latin Fathers of the Church. This sculpture reflects the devotional artistry of the Renaissance, combining theological depth with masterful craftsmanship.
