A small late 17th-century ironbound table top box of six-plank, nailed construction.

Continental origin.

The upper surface of the lid is inscribed with graffiti-carved initials of "MES" and the date of "1501". The date cannot be relied upon in terms of the age of the box and was more than likely inscribed at a much later date.

The lock plate and iron bindings are original, as are the hinges and carry-handles.

The lid, complete with cleated ends, opens to reveal an interior void of any fittings.

Supported on turned bun feet with one naively made replacement.

Historic Context

Table boxes or caskets like this were used across Europe in the 17th century to store valuables, documents, or personal effects. The six-plank nailed build and cleated lid reflect vernacular joinery techniques of the period, while the iron strapping and lock plate suggest secure domestic or clerical use.

Graffiti initials carved into the surface offer a glimpse into its lived history—possibly denoting ownership, lineage, or devotional markings. Bun feet elevate the box both physically and stylistically, aligning with late Renaissance and early Baroque furniture traditions.

Such boxes were often kept on desks or tables in merchant homes, monasteries, or civic offices. Their compact form and robust construction made them ideal for safeguarding items in an era before widespread cabinetry.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - Please refer to the images. Restored historically. There are traces of later black over-paint to the ironwork. The key is missing, and the hasp is also missing from the lid, as a timber filleted repair has been made to the front of the lid. Three of the turned wooden feet appear to be original; however, the fourth has been replaced with a naively formed foot. The box may also have been lacquered at some point with a clear lacquer. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
