A small late 17th-Century ironbound table top box of six plank, nailed, construction.
Continental origin.
The upper surface of the lid is inscribed with graffiti-carved initials of "MES" and date of "1501". The date cannot be relied upon in terms of the age of the box and was more than likely inscribed at a much later date.
The lock plate and iron bindings are original as too are the hinges and carry-handles.
The lid, complete with cleated ends opens to reveal an interior void of any fittings.
Supported on turned bun feet with one naively made replacement.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - Please refer to the images. Restored historically. There are traces of later black over-paint to the iron work. The key is missing and the hasp is also missing to the lad as a timber filleted repair has been made to the front of the lid. Three if the turned wooden feet appear to be original however the forth has been replaced with a naively form foot. The box may also have been lacquered at some point with a clear lacquer.
