A decorative 18th-Century hand-forged antique wrought iron rotating gridiron.
French origin.
With an elongated handle and shaft with hanging hook, adjoining a rotating iron pan by way of a central pivot. The rotating pan with decorative linear and rippled iron work. Supported overall on three legs.
What is a gridiron?
These devices were used for what we now currently refer to as "broiling" in cooking, i.e. searing meat, and other foodstuffs directly over the heat of an open fire. Made of wrought iron, gridirons were once commonplace on the hearth of an old fireplace.
Their decorative appearance makes them ideal decoration for the period home in homage to times past.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - Please refer to the images. There is oxidation and surface wear commensurate with age. The gridiron still rotates. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
