A diminutive late 17th‑century English child’s bench/box settle, constructed in a charming vernacular mix of oak, pine and ash. Of notably small proportions, this piece was made for two children or two adolescents, its scale giving it an irresistible sculptural presence in any interior.

The bench retains its original period character, with a beautifully worn seat, pegged joinery, and a practical lift‑lid box base offering storage. The combination of timbers — oak for strength, pine for economy, and ash for flexibility — is entirely typical of rural workshop practice in the late 1600s. The surface shows centuries of handling, softening, and honest domestic use, giving the piece a warm, tactile authenticity.

Perfect for entryways, children’s rooms, country house settings, or as a statement primitive form in contemporary interiors. A rare survivor of early domestic furniture in a highly desirable small scale.

Provenance: English vernacular workshop, late 17th century. Likely produced in a rural domestic setting where mixed timbers were commonly used for practical seating and storage furniture.

Material: Mixed timbers.

Condition: Please refer to the images. Wear consistent with 300+ years of domestic use: surface softening, minor age‑related marks, stable joints, and a beautifully patinated finish. No modern repairs that detract from authenticity.

Size: Width 83.5 cm x Back Height 100 cm x Overall Depth 47.5 cm x Seat Height 43 cm (Width 32 3/4" x Back Height 39 1/2" x Overall Depth 18 3/4" Seat Height 17")
