A sensitively rendered portrait of a mature lady, attributed to the Dutch School, mid-17th century. The sitter is captured in profile with a contemplative expression, her features delicately modelled in a muted palette.
The unknown sitter is portrayed in typical 17th-century Dutch dress, wearing:
Dark clothing: The subject appears to wear a high-necked, dark garment with minimal ornamentation — a hallmark of Dutch Protestant modesty, especially among older women in the 1600s. Her clothing would suggest someone of middle-class origin rather than an aristocrat.
Linen flat collar: common in the Dutch Golden Age.
Head covering: Many 17th-century Dutch women wore close-fitting caps or hoods, often white linen, as a sign of piety and age. Black headress would often depict mourning.
