Diminutive 16th Century Renaissance Period Italian Antique Walnut Six-plank Cassone Marriage Chest or Coffer

 

A 16th Century Italian antique Renaissance Period cassone or marriage chest of small size.

Of six-plank, nailed, construction. The plank lid, decorated with a head and shoulders portrait of a Saint within a roundel surrounded by scrolls and flowers and moulded edge, joined to the carcass by way of later iron hinges. The front is heavily gilded and depicts two naive "Romayne" type portraits of a male and female set within decorative borders with stylised flowers and foliage.

Supported on cut-out end boards. The end boards are also painted, each with a figure set within an arcaded frieze on gilded ground, the outer edges again decorated with flowers and foliage.

Superb colour and patination.

Condition - good as the per the images. The plank lid may have been decorated later. The original wire hinges have been replaced with 19thC iron hinges.
