A rare and diminutive 16th-century antique missal box, bound in richly patinated leather with iron strapwork and studded detailing. Crafted to house a missal—a liturgical book containing the prayers and rites of the Mass—this compact box speaks to the devotional practices of the late medieval and early Renaissance period.
The wooden carcass is clad in thick leather, darkened with age and burnished by centuries of handling. Iron bands and corner braces provide both protection and ornament, while the small scale suggests personal use, perhaps by a travelling cleric or within a private chapel.
A deeply atmospheric object, ideal for collectors of ecclesiastical antiques, medieval furnishings, or those drawn to the quiet gravity of sacred relics.
