A 17th Century English Antique Leather Costrel, Repurposed As A Candle Box

A rare survivor of 17th-century English craftsmanship, this antique leather costrel -originally designed as a portable vessel for carrying liquids - was thoughtfully repurposed many years ago as a candle box, preserving its utilitarian charm while offering a new lease of life.

Crafted from thick, hand-stitched leather and bearing the impressed initials "IG," the costrel retains its original form with rounded shoulders and a flattened base, typical of the period’s travel flasks. The surface bears a rich, timeworn patina, with subtle creases and tonal variations that speak to centuries of use and handling. Its transformation into a candle box is both practical and poetic, allowing the piece to remain functional while showcasing its historical integrity.

Provenance - Unknown, although it bears a historic poetic note inside, stating:

"THEN  WHEN THIS BOTTEL IT DOTH GROW OLD,

AND WILL GOOD LIQJOR NO LONGER HOLD,

OUT OF THE SIDE YOU MAY TAKE A CLOUT

WILL MEND YOUR SHOES WHEN THEY ARE OUT;

ELSE TAKE IT AND HANG IT ON A PIN

IT WILL SERVE TO PUT MANY AN OLD TRIFLE IN

AS HINGES, AULES AND CANDLE ENDS

FOR YOUNG BEGINNERS MUST HAVE SUCH THINGS.

THEN I WISH IN HEAVEN HIS SOUL SHALL DWELL

THAT FIRST DEVISED THE LEATHER BOTTEL."
