A rare 15th Century English antique carved oak misericord, circa 1450.
The breadth of this example suggests it once formed part of a prominent choir stall, offering discreet support to clergy during extended services.
The carving retains excellent definition carved in relief with stylised foliage flanked by carved branches terminating with trefoil-shaped leaves. The rich, aged patina embodies the Gothic tradition of combining sacred utility with artistic craftsmanship. Larger misericords of this type are exceptionally scarce, making this survival a significant piece of ecclesiastical heritage for collectors and institutions alike.
Provenance: England. Mid-15th-century.
Condition: As per the images. The reverse has been cleaned back at some point, and the top too. This isn't detrimental to the carving, which displays very well.
Size: Height 19.5 cm x Width 54 cm x Depth 14 cm (7 3/4" x 21 1/4" x 5 1/2")
Background & History of Misericords
Definition: From Latin misericordia (“act of mercy”), a misericord is a supportive ledge beneath a folding choir stall seat.
Origins: First appearing in the Romanesque period, they flourished in Gothic churches from the 13th–15th centuries.
Function: Provided subtle relief during long services, while carvings often reflected sacred, moral, or secular themes.
Artistic Value: Misericords are celebrated for their imaginative iconography, offering rare glimpses into medieval humor and daily life within a sacred setting.
Survival: Many were destroyed or altered during the Reformation reforms, making intact examples highly desirable today.
Commanding in scale yet intimate in purpose, this misericord bridges sacred utility with Gothic artistry. Preserved across centuries, it offers collectors and institutions alike a rare fragment of medieval devotion — oak shaped by faith, endurance, and the quiet humanity of worship.
