A characterful example of late 18th-century English rural craftsmanship, this antique harvest barrel—commonly referred to as a costrel—was traditionally used to carry cider or ale into the fields during harvest. Constructed from wooden staves bound by iron hoops, it features a shaped iron carry-handle, allowing for easy transport and practical use in agricultural settings.
The form is compact and robust, with a gently domed body and flat ends, typical of vernacular drinking vessels of the period. Its surface bears a rich, aged patina, with traces of wear that speak to its working life and honest utility. Whether displayed as part of a breweriana collection or integrated into a rustic interior, this piece offers both decorative appeal and historical resonance.
