Early 17th Century English Antique Six-Plank Chest / Coffer With Three Locks

A robust and evocative example of early English domestic furniture, this six-plank coffer dates to the early 1600s.

Crafted from solid oak, it features a hinged lid opening to reveal an interior fitted with a candle box (till) — an original detail that speaks to its period utility. The coffer is secured, unusually, with three iron locks and retains some of its original iron fittings, all of which are rich in patina. This coffer may have been made for a wealthy household or a church, given the number of locks! Raised on raised stile supports and cut-out end boards, it stands with quiet authority and timeless charm.

• Finish: Deep brown tone with aged character and decorative chip carving to the edges of the main carcass, and ends of the lid. The hinges have been replaced historically.
• Condition: Structurally sound with wear consistent with age - the plank lid has been repaired to the front and back, but has been undertaken by an accomplished hand.
