A late 17th-Century English school antique oil on canvas portrait of an aristocratic lady. 

Circle of Robert Byng. Byng was a portrait artist from Wiltshire. He worked as a studio assistant to Sir Godfrey Kneller, a leading portrait painter working in England during the late 17th and early 18th century. As well as working in Kneller's studio Byng produced a number of works in his own right. Examples of his paintings can be found in public art collections including Wells City Council, Thetford Museum & the University of Oxford.

The Unknown sitter portrayed full-length, seated, wearing an ochre dress with a blue cloak and holding flowers, a garden scene with lake yonder.

Presented in a period gilt-gesso frame which incorporates floral rosettes.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - Please refer to the images. Re-lined historically. With replaced stretchers. There is some evidence of retouching and there are two minor paint losses to the canvas. A further detailed condition report is available upon request. The portrait displays well and has period charm.
