A 16th-century English antique oak coffer with some later repairs.

With a large single plank top over a front panel carved with two rows of nulling and linear decoration. Supported overall on four raised stile feet, again carved with linear decoration. 

A similar chest was sold by Lyon & Turnbull Auctioneers, Edinburgh, 31st Mar 2010. Lot 362. 

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - Please refer to the images. This is a good, early piece of English oak furniture. There are some traces of historic woodworm. This is inactive and has been treated as a precautionary measure. The plank top has some minor age-related splits, and there is an old patch repair to the top, too, approximately 6.5 cm by 7 cm in size. 

The lock plate has been removed, and a later wooden panel has been added at some point to replace the site of the lock plate.* There are some splits/cracks to the legs, which are stable. There is an old blacksmith's repair to the base where two iron bands provide additional support to the base panel. 

* We do have several 16th-century lockplates in stock and could look to replacing the wooden panel with one of these, subject to an additional fee/charge. Please contact us for details.
