Rare 16th Century German Antique Nuremberg Made Miniature Table Casket / Table Box – attributed to Michael Mann.
A rare late 16th Century miniature Nuremberg-made antique table top casket. In completely original condition.
Gilt metal, the lid with a carry handle and etched with two mythical serpents over the main carcass, the front decorated with head and shoulder portraits within roundels depicting a male and female figure (the casket may have been made to represent a marriage); flanked at each end with winged cherubs, verso the back panel is also decorated with two Romayne-type panels, one featuring a soldier wearing a comb morion helmet, the other possibly depicting a Moor. Supported overall on four ball feet.
Attributed to the workshop of Michel Mann (no makers mark) of Nuremberg.
The box has never had any sign of a lock mechanism or key.
Condition - good as per images. Age related wear to the gilt. This box displays incredibly well.
