A charming and unusual 19th‑century miniature cast‑lead paperweight modelled as a votive hand, dating to around 1840. Compact yet full of presence, the hand is rendered with a wonderfully naïve sculptural quality — the fingers slightly stylised, the surface worn smooth from decades of handling.

These small cast‑lead objects were often produced as desk novelties, mementos, or symbolic tokens. This example has the perfect scale for a gentleman’s library, writing desk, or cabinet of curiosities, where its tactile weight and enigmatic form invite closer inspection.

The lead has developed a soft, matte patina with subtle oxidised toning, giving the piece a quiet gravitas. A delightful survivor of Victorian taste, symbolism, and personal ornament.

Provenance: Probably European. 19th-century.

Hands have long been used as votive symbols — representing protection, blessing, fidelity, or remembrance. By the mid‑19th century, miniature hands appear in jewellery, desk objects, and sentimental keepsakes. Cast‑lead examples like this were affordable, durable, and often displayed on writing tables or shelves as tokens of affection or curiosity.

In the Victorian era, the hand motif also carried associations with craftsmanship, industry, and the dignity of labour, making such pieces particularly fitting for a study or library.

Material: Solid cast lead.

Condition: Good antique condition with expected surface wear, minor pitting, and age‑related patina consistent with 19th‑century lead objects. No damage or repairs. Stable and display‑ready.

Dimensions: Height 10 cm (4")

A small but compelling Victorian curiosity — tactile, symbolic, and full of character. A perfect accent for the discerning collector.
