A 19th-century antique brass "cricket box" of Asian origin of small size.

This is a small, hinged brass box originally used to house crickets. Nowadays, they are often used in the modern home to store trinkets or matches. They also make useful potpourri holders or pomanders.

The tradition of keeping crickets as pets dates back to ancient China. Crickets were kept in boxes and cages for their song and were considered to bring good luck.

In ancient China, cricket boxes were often made from ceramic jars, wooden cages, and carved gourds. Asian examples, such as those made of brass, originate from India.

With a small carry handle, this brass box is formed from sheet brass made into an oval-shaped box with a decorative hasp  A keep is mounted upon the carcass. The carcass has cut-out decoration throughout.
