A charming early 17thC English antique oak coffer of small proportions.
Six plank nailed construction with 'V" cut end boards.
The plank top with thumb-nail-carved edge over a boarded front. The front, scratch-carved with simple linear decoration and chip-carving to the outer edges with shaped supporting spandrels below. It has its original lock plate. The top is fitted to the carcass by way of the original wire hinges and lifts to reveal an interior void of any fittings.
This coffer has a wonderful surface that has become well-patinated over the many centuries of use.
Condition -There is minor age-related wear to the stile feet of the end boards. The lid also has split historically and has been stablised many years ago with the addition of three supporting batons to the underside.
