An 18th Century Welsh Antique Pine Settle In Original Paint

Settles of this quality and integrity are seldom found. This one came directly from a farmhouse in mid-Wales. Beyond a minor old repair to the tip of one front leg, it has come down to us essentially as it left the maker’s hands in the 18th century.
The back is framed with five tall panels between stiles that rise to softly rounded tops. Boldly down-swept arms end in rounded hand-holds and rest on chamfered supports, which continue down as the front legs. The long plank seat sits on a plain, deep apron, and the chamfered legs are joined front to back by low side stretchers. Between the rear legs, a long single-panelled board closes the lower back. It was almost certainly meant to keep draughts off the sitter’s legs: a telling detail of a piece made to stand in a cold stone farmhouse, drawn up to the hearth.
The surface is the great joy of the piece. The paint has worn over some 250 years of use to a soft, chalky grey-green, rubbed back to the timber at the arms, seat and edges where generations of hands and bodies have met it. It is a surface that cannot be faked and should never be touched.

Condition: Please refer to the images. The painted surface is original, with the wear and losses expected after long domestic use. There are minor traces of old, inactive worm to the two front legs, and age-related losses to the tips of the feet, chiefly the front legs, one of which has a minor old repair. There is natural shrinkage to the back panels. It is structurally sound and ready for use.
