An 18th century antique treen riddle board for making oat cakes and oat bread in Scotland and Northern England.

A riddle board was used in traditional oatcake making by sprinkling oatmeal onto its surface, then pouring batter on top, allowing the batter to spread evenly across the oatmeal layer, essentially “riddling” it into a circular shape before transferring it to a hot griddle to cook; this process created a thin, evenly distributed oatcake batter.

Made from walnut with a lattice-type design, handle and hanging hole.

Good colour and patina.

Provenance - Formerly in the collection of Alex Wright, collector.

Condition - As per the images. There are minor age/usage related losses to the edges. There is a vertical split to the board. Thisnappears to have been repaired historically. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size - 50 cm x 47 cm (19 5/8" x 18 1/2")
