A hand-forged wrought iron candlestick of vernacular form, English, 18th century. Rising from a tripod base of three splayed legs terminating in everted, gently scrolled feet, the candlestick supports a dished circular drip pan from which springs a slender tapering stem, surmounted by a single rolled socket for one candle.
The whole is the work of a country blacksmith, the socket formed characteristically from a sheet of wrought iron rolled into a cylinder, the seam left visible as evidence of its hand manufacture. The metal retains a deep, even patina throughout, with the soft, hammered surface and minor irregularities of line that distinguish genuine forged work from later decorative reproduction. The tripod form lends both stability and an architectural elegance, raising the flame to a useful height on a table or coffer.
Such candlesticks were the everyday lighting of the English farmhouse and lesser household, and surviving 18th-century examples in this honest state are increasingly sought after by collectors of early domestic ironwork.
