A Well-Sized 16th Century Renaissance Antique Brass Winged Cherub Appliqué

A 16th-century Continental Renaissance Period cast brass appliqué of a winged cherub, probably Spanish or Italian.
Boldly cast in relief as a seraph — the youthful head with curled hair framed by scrolled ears, rising from a feathered collar and flanked by a pair of outswept, crescent-shaped wings, each pierced at the tip for a fixing pin. The reverse retains its original integral square-section tang, hand-filed and cast in one with the plaque, indicating the mount was driven through and clenched into a timber ground — almost certainly a fitting from a piece of ecclesiastical case furniture, a tabernacle, coffer or cabinet.
The winged cherub head was among the most enduring motifs of the Renaissance, symbolising the heavenly host and appearing throughout church woodwork, metalware and funerary art across Catholic Europe. The present example is a particularly charming and naive rendering, the face full of character, with a deep, untouched olive-green patina and soft handling wear to the high points consistent with age.
A wonderful survivor and a most decorative small object, equally suited to display, study, or reuse as a cabinet ornament.
Provenance: Probably Spanish or Italian. 16th-century.
Material: Cast brass.
Condition: Please refer to the images. Good original condition commensurate with age. Old surface wear and minor edge losses; original tang intact to reverse. Untouched patina throughout.
