A boldly proportioned Scottish pewter “Tappit Hen”, dating to the 18th century, with classic flared neck, bulbous body, shaped lid, and thumbpiece. This form was used extensively in Edinburgh taverns and public houses, where pewter was prized for its durability and affordability. The name “tappit hen” derives from the Scots word “tappit”, meaning crested — referring to the thumbpiece which resembles a hen’s crest or "tap" (top).
These measures were used for wine, ale, and spirits, often in communal settings. The true Scottish pint was larger than the English equivalent, and the Tappit Hen became a symbol of conviviality and civic pride. Robert Burns himself drank from one at John Dowie’s Tavern in Edinburgh, and the form became iconic in Lowland drinking culture.
This example is exceptionally large, standing 35 cm tall, with a strong lid hinge, bold handle, and visible maker’s mark, albeit worn, beneath. The surface shows expected wear and oxidation, with a warm grey patina and tactile presence.
