A Very Large & Impressive 17th Century Antique Carved Pine Hammerbeam Roof Angel

Once adorning an ecclesiastical hammerbeam roof, we offer for sale this 16th Century antique carved pine Angel of large proportions.

Once common place, especially in Norfolk, many centuries ago, a church roof full of angels hovering benevolently over the congregation must have been a comforting reminder of the heaven they hoped awaited them. To the 21st Century visitor, they are a source of wonder and remain amongst Norfolk's finest treasures. Absolute masterpieces of carpentry and engineering, 15thC examples survive largely because the iconoclasts of the Reformation were simply unable to reach them.

In Norfolk there are over forty stunning angel roofs, mostly 15th-century, some original, others restored. Our example dates to the early 16th-century.

Our example is portrayed looking forward, with waves in his hair, swathed in robes and wearing a sash. His right and left hand hold onto the sash, the right on his breast, the left at his side.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - As per the images. The left side has a repaired split running from his left shoulder full length to its base. This may have been caused historically when the angel was removed from the roof. The figure does display well despite this. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
