A Rare Miniature Antique Steel Model / Replica of a Medieval Nuremberg Iron Maiden / Eiserne Jungfrau

This is a finely made antique cast‑metal replica of the medieval device historically known as the Iron Maiden (Eiserne Jungfrau), associated with Nuremberg and referenced in European folklore and later antiquarian literature. The German title Eiserne Jungfrau appears on the front of the base, with Nurnberg on the reverse, reflecting the traditional attribution.

It is now known that Iron Maidens were not medieval. The first known references and physical examples only appear in the late 18th to 19th century, not the Middle Ages. Most historians now agree they were Victorian-era inventions or museum fabrications, created to dramatise the past.

The model is highly detailed, with hinged doors that open to reveal an interior fitted with miniature spikes, faithfully echoing the form seen in 19th and early‑20th‑century museum reproductions. This example bears no cast, nor maker's mark. 

Standing approximately 5½ inches tall and 2 inches across the base, this example is in excellent condition, with only the lightest surface ageing to a few of the interior spikes. Both doors open freely. 

Miniature Iron Maiden models were produced as curiosities, educational objects, and collector pieces, and well‑preserved examples such as this are increasingly sought after. Rarely coming up for sale, when they do, they realise strong prices in the saleroom and with online retailers, too. 

This would make a characterful addition to collections of historical replicas, metalware miniatures, or cabinet‑of‑curiosity displays.
