A rare and tactile 17th‑century English slipware pouring bowl, decorated in trailing slip and fitted with a single pulled handle and a small spout. This form — less common than the standard drinking bowl — was likely used for pouring warm liquids, such as broths, sauces, or medicinal preparations, in a domestic or apothecary setting.

The decoration is executed in cream trailing slip over a red earthenware body, with freehand curves and dot motifs typical of North Devon or West Country rural potteries working between c.1650 and 1700. The glaze is warm and glossy, with areas of natural wear and patination that speak to centuries of use.

The combination of handle and spout suggests a functional vessel designed for controlled pouring, rather than drinking — making this a rarer survival within the slipware tradition. The bowl has a strong presence, with honest wear and the spontaneous charm of early English folk pottery.

Provenance: North Devon or West Country, England. 17th Century, c.1650–1700.

Material: Earthenware body with slip‑trailed decoration under clear lead glaze.

Condition: Pulled handle and small spout. Wear to the glaze. There are minor frits to the base. Structurally stable. Photos show the actual item.

Dimensions: Height 13 cm / 5.12 in

A rare survivor of 17th‑century domestic life — tactile, functional, and full of the spontaneous charm that defines early English slipware.
